MercyMe

 The popularity of Christian music has grown tremendously in the last decade or so, in part due to bands like MercyMe, a contemporary Christian band.  Founded in Greenville, Texas in 1994, the band includes as its members singer Bart Millard, keyboard player James Bryson and guitarists Michael Scheuchzer and Barry Graul.  Their music, while keeping to the themes of Christianity, also has crossover appeal, which has brought a wider audience to their music, as well as Christian music in general.  Their top crossover song was "I Can Only Imagine," in the first part of the last decade, and the album that contained that song went double platinum. 

 In the past ten years, MercyMe has released several albums and received numerous accolades for their work.  Among the awards they have received are several Dove Awards and several Grammy nominations.  They also received the title of Adult Contemporary Songs Artist of the Decade and their song "Word of God Speak" was named the best Christian song of the decade.

While Christian contemporary music may not be the typical musical leanings of the majority of Americans, people should give groups like MercyMe a fair listen, because they may be surprised at how much they can relate to the themes and ideas discussed in their songs.  Besides that, they just play great music and that is something that everyone can appreciate and relate to.
